Golf Tournament
& Party
April 27th & 28th, 2025
The 6th Annual Setzer Wide Open Party and Golf Tournament is scheduled to take place April 27th & 28th, 2025 at Forsyth Country Club. Heart health awareness is still a critical topic which cannot take a year off. Please remember to be proactive with your heart health as prevention is critical in detecting issues both large and small. For more information about how to maintain and monitor your heart health, please visit www.heart.org. You can donate directly to the Barclay L. Setzer Fund which supports heart health related charities. Donate here.
In 2018, a small group of Clay’s friends, with the support of his widow (Stephanie), children (Thomas and Anna), parents (Jerry and Carolyn), and brother (Jerry Jr.), have decided to start the Barclay L. Setzer Fund to support the fight against heart disease and promote awareness for heart related illnesses. Clay was only 47 when he succumbed to a heart attack while playing in a holiday golf tournament in December, 2017. Currently, heart disease is the number one cause of death of both men and women in the United States. Seldom do weeks go by without learning of another family’s life being impacted dramatically by heart attacks, strokes and other heart related diseases.
One of the goals of the Barclay L. Setzer Fund is to raise awareness about heart disease and the importance of early prevention. Diagnosis and recognizing the symptoms commonly associated with heart disease, as well as how to be proactive with your health, are important in battling the dangers of heart-related illnesses and deaths. The fund will raise money to be used directly to impact our community by supporting heart-health related organizations.
Now is the time to join together to contribute and honor Clay by being a part of something positive, while having fun and making new memories on the golf course. The Sixth Annual Setzer Wide Open Golf Tournament benefiting the Barclay L. Setzer Fund is being held at Forsyth Country Club on April 27th & 28th, 2025. The funds raised this year for the Barclay L. Setzer fund will go to support a heart health related charity to be determined.

The Fifth Annual Setzer Wide Open Golf Tournament and Party was once again a tremendous success and the abundance of support was overwhelming. The net proceeds from the Setzer Wide Open reached close to $40,000! The money raised went to the Barclay L. Setzer Fund, which was distributed between the American Heart Association and the Novant Health Foundation Heart and Vascular department. We are extremely grateful and appreciative of all the support and generosity by so many in the community, especially our volunteers, sponsors and donors.
We were fortunate to have generous sponsors and patrons that donated items, money, and time to help support the Setzer Wide Open. The golf tournament sold out within a few minutes which included 31, 4-man teams competing in a captain’s choice format. The weather was perfect this year and a fun time was had by all. The post tournament long drive competition, and the putting contest were exciting events, capping off a wonderful two day event. Forsyth Country Club’s support helped facilitate a first class event and we are grateful for their participation and continued support this year.
We would like to thank Novant for providing blood pressure screenings and hands only CPR instruction during the golf tournament. Our purpose is to raise heart health awareness and support heart related charities while having fun and remembering Clay. We are looking forward to the next Setzer Wide Open on April 27th & 28th, 2025. Thank you for your continued love and support!

In Memory of Barclay “Clay” Setzer, DDS
1970-2017
Barclay Laird Setzer, 47, of Winston-Salem died unexpectedly on December 2, 2017 at Forsyth Country Club surrounded by his golfing buddies. Clay was born April 11, 1970, in Gastonia, NC, the second son of Jerry L. Setzer Sr. and Carolyn Dark Setzer of Spartanburg, SC. Clay grew up in Dunn, NC, and graduated from Triton High School. He graduated from the University of Richmond in 1992 with a B.S. in Chemistry, and earned his Doctorate of Dental Surgery from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 1996. Upon graduation, he served in the U.S. Navy as a dental officer stationed for three years at Camp Lejeune. He began his dental practice in Winston-Salem, NC, and was devoted to serving countless families for 18 years. He was respected by his dental colleagues for his quality of dental practice, and was beloved by his patients for his attentiveness, good humor and gifted conversation. He enjoyed volunteering his dental service and time with the Community Care Center. He put his patients first and was always available to them no matter what the hour.
His devotion to all things golf was only exceeded by his love for his family. His favorite pastime was watching his son play golf and his daughter play basketball. Most weekends, when not attending his children’s sporting events, he could be found on the golf course with his friends.
Clay was highly thought of as a dear friend to many all throughout the community. This is evident by the recent installation of a beautiful Verdin four sided clock beside the putting green at Forsyth Country Club. A group of his friends raised the funds to honor him with this gift. A ceremony was held on December 1, 2018, to dedicate it in his memory. It has become known as “Clay’s Clock” and has many different meanings, but one thing no one can deny is it is a beautiful tribute to a man who lived his life the right way, had a profound effect on his closest friends, and will never be forgotten by them or future generations who play the historic golf course.
